Seriously ill newborns have complex care needs. At Queen of the Valley Hospital’s 40-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a specially trained team works non-stop to provide the best care possible for these fragile and tiny patients. Volunteer Martha Soria, along with the S. Mark Taper Foundation and Golden State Foods, demonstrate their support for this vulnerable population through their time, gifts and grants.

Los Angeles County, home to ten million residents, includes cities with some of the richest and poorest communities in the nation. Many times situated side by side, these communities experience striking differences in wealth, opportunity and health. A critical element to prevent these inequities is improved access to the resources people need to be healthy. Born in Mexico, brought by his father to the U.S. at age 15 along with the rest of his family, José learned early the value of hard work and charity toward others. He has spent a lifetime building his business, providing for his family and caring for the community, while never forgetting his roots.

At a time when mothers want to feel completely connected and in tune with their newborn, the separation and anxiety caused by hospitalization can seem overwhelming.
