What is radiation therapy?
Radiation oncology is a specialty that uses radiation treatments to kill or shrink cancer cells in the body.
Types of radiation treatments:
- Radiation therapy: a treatment using high-energy beams to target an affected area that is outside the body.
- Brachytherapy: a treatment that targets a specific area that is inside the body.
Depending on the severity and type of cancer, radiation treatments can:
- Treat and cure cancer cells.
- Destroy cancer cells.
- Stop or slow the growth of cancer cells and tumors.
- Relieve cancer symptoms in cases where it is not curable, including reducing the tumor size and controlling its spread.
Some of the cancers we treat with radiation therapy:
- Brain: Treatments are precise and conform to the tumor, avoiding healthy and sensitive brain tissue. Our technology and programs provide higher efficiency, consistency, and quality to maximize the effectiveness of your procedure.
- Lung: Treatments include advanced stabilizers that allow patients to breathe at their normal pace during treatments, which helps to avoid harming other organs surrounding the lung’s affected areas.
- Breast: Treatments minimize radiation exposure to heart and lung tissues through motion management technology that senses movement from breathing.
- Prostate: Precise diagnosis provides high-quality images that enhance the prostate anatomy and soft tissue to direct accurate treatment to the area.

Specialized treatment and technology
Our precise treatments and delivery systems help to ensure your treatment is effective and safe, along with the assistance and care of your radiation oncology care team.
Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, which includes:
- Delivers more precise treatments quickly using intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) so that patients do not have to be still for a long time period. This reduces the chances of patients shifting and moving during treatment.
- Use one rotation of the treatment machine around the patient, as opposed to other time-consuming treatments that uses several rotations, improving the quality of patient care.
- Adjusts for tumor movement, which is important in lung cancer patients since breathing can move the affected area receiving the treatment.
- Delivers non-coplanar stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments to affected areas with varying surface levels, such as brain and lung cancer.
- Conducts treatment delivery “dry runs” before delivering treatment to patients to increase safety and outcomes.
- Increases treatment accuracy by automatically correcting a patient’s position and adjusting the treatment delivery to focus on targeted areas.
- Reduces patient discomfort.
- Provides high-quality imaging and precise information on the extent and shape of the cancer.
- Shows what organs and tissues could be at risk in the target area.
- Monitors patients’ breathing to adjust treatment delivery due to chest motions.
- Targets affected area of the lung to help manage the tumor movement during treatment.
- Provides a system that allows the medical team to work collaboratively together.
- Refines treatments to avoid impacting healthy tissue.
Other systems used to personalize your treatment:
- Provides precise treatment plans, delivers HDR to the affected areas, and minimizes exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
- Includes functions to improve efficiency and safety, which allows the medical team to spend more time with their patients.
- Supports high-dose and low-dose radiation, and pulsed-dose rate treatments.
- Uses film and 3D images to provide precise and efficient treatment planning, including determining dosage, conforming treatment images to affected areas, and streamlining treatment delivery.
- Supports medical and radiation oncology.
- Tracks a patient’s cancer journey, allowing the healthcare team to quickly and accurately assess and treat each patient according to their specific case.
