What is infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy delivers medication, often intravenously through the vein, directly through a needle or catheter. For cancer treatments, the most common infusion therapy is chemotherapy. While surgery and radiation therapy targets specific body areas, chemotherapy is a powerful treatment that destroys cancer cells and helps prevent tumor growth.
What to expect: receiving infusion treatments
The Emanate Health Infusion Center is an all-in-one space that provides you with a compassionate environment, high-quality infusion therapy procedures, and supportive services. Your medical team is here to take care of you and to help you fight cancer.
Here are steps in the treatment process
- Emanate Health staff will coordinate with you on your treatment schedule.
- Your oncologist will perform additional exams and tests to determine the amount of chemotherapy for your treatment, along with any additional supportive medications.
- You will meet with your infusion therapy care team to review your treatment plan. Additional tests may be conducted to ensure you are receiving the correct treatment amount.
- Oncology pharmacists will prepare your customized treatment on-site in a sterile environment. They are part of your care team and coordinate with your oncologists and nurses on your infusion medication.
- You will be seated in the infusion bays, or a private room, to receive your treatment.
- After your treatment is completed, your nurse will review potential side effects and provide recommendations to mediate any symptoms.
- Check with your oncologist on your personalized treatment timeline as procedures vary depending on your diagnosis and personal health factors.
Additional recommendations
- Bring a friend or family member to keep you company during your treatments. However, those who are sick should not accompany you as they would be a health risk to you and other patients receiving treatments.
- Bring any items that will help you pass time. We have free Wi-Fi and an iPad available to entertain you. You can also bring books, headphones, or your laptop. Check with your nurse navigator if you are uncertain whether your item is allowed.
- Wear comfortable clothing during your treatment. We will provide you with blankets if needed, and you are welcome to bring items that will keep you comfortable.
- Drink plenty of fluids before your treatment.
- Bring any easy-to-eat snacks and drinks that are recommended by your oncologists that you can consume during your treatment. Avoid bringing any foods that need additional preparation, such as microwaved meals.
Please contact your dedicated nurse navigator if you have questions.
