Guenther Foundation Awards Emanate Health Foundation $250,000 Grant to Support New Emergency Department
The Henry L. Guenther Foundation grant will help the new emergency department at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina enhance care in the region.
COVINA, Calif. — Emanate Health Foundation today announced that it has received a $250,000 grant from the Henry L. Guenther Foundation to support the purchase of medical equipment and technology in the new state-of-the-art emergency department and intensive care unit (ED-ICU) at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina. Currently under construction, the new facility will help to better diagnose and treat more patients in our region.
“Emanate Health is very grateful to the Guenther Foundation because their continued investment puts us one step closer to opening one of the largest emergency departments and ICUs in the San Gabriel Valley,” said Emanate Health President & CEO Roger Sharma.
“With its larger capacity, Emanate Health will be able to serve more emergency patients at Queen of the Valley Hospital and help to minimize overcrowding in emergency departments at neighboring hospitals in the area,” Sharma said. “We’re proud that we can help to reduce the patient strain at other facilities and impact emergency care services on a regional basis, and the Guenther Foundation is a valued partner in this effort.”
The grant will specifically help fund the purchase and installation of onsite computerized tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and X-ray devices. This equipment will be physically located in the new facility, saving precious time now needed to take patients to other parts of the hospital for these tests. It will also allow doctors and nurses to better diagnose and treat more patients.
“The Henry L. Guenther Foundation congratulates Emanate Health Foundation on the expansion of their emergency department and intensive care unit,” said Board Chairperson Susanne Sundberg. “We know that with the purchase of the most advanced medical equipment, Emanate Health is well-positioned to serve a greater number of patients in Southern California and provide life-saving care for the most vulnerable. The Guenther Foundation is proud to partner with Emanate Health to ensure top quality care in the San Gabriel Valley and beyond.”
The two-story, 60,000-square-foot building will include a new 60-bed emergency department on the first floor and 24-bed ICU on the second floor. Originally built in 1962 to serve 35,000 patients a year, the facility today treats more than 80,000 patients annually. Once the new emergency department is completed in spring 2024, it will be able to accommodate more than 120,000 visits a year, better serving the community and addressing a critical need.
“We want to build the emergency department and ICU that’s never been built before in this region. We want to recalibrate the number of exam rooms for seriously ill or injured patients, and those with minor ailments to better reflect the needs of our community,” said Sergio Hernandez, MD, Medical Director, Emergency Services, for Queen of the Valley Hospital. “This new approach will help us to effectively and efficiently care for more patients in the San Gabriel Valley for generations to come.”
The Guenther Foundation is among the lead donors that have invested in Emanate Health Foundation’s historic $25 million comprehensive fundraising campaign, which was publicly launched in October 2022. For more information about the campaign, visit emanatehealth.org/campaign.
